In linguistics, “orthographic satiation” describes a phenomenon where, upon prolonged inspection, a written word seems to lose its meaning and become a meaningless collection of visual elements. When I walk the streets of Manhattan, I often experience a similar sensation regarding not the written word, but the built environment around me.  City/Scape seeks to explore this unsettling dissociation of familiar visual structures from their understood significance in human experience, leaving them open to abstract reinterpretation and reimagination.  In this series of images, perspective is alternately exaggerated and flattened, each effect contributing to the uncomfortable sensation that something is off balance, simultaneously recognizable but unfamiliar.
