City/scape
(2025, ongoing series)
In linguistics, “orthographic satiation” describes a phenomenon where, upon prolonged inspection, a written word seems to lose its association with any linguistic significance and become a meaningless collection of visual elements. I often experience a similar sensation regarding not the written word, but the built environment around me. City/scape seeks to explore this unsettling dissociation of familiar visual structures from their presumed significance in human experience, leaving them open to reinterpretation. Perspective is alternately exaggerated and flattened, each effect contributing to the uncomfortable sensation that something is off balance, simultaneously recognizable but unfamiliar.
